Mr. Spoden visits Schleissheim

A drive through the castle parks to the Oberschleissheim city hall in the ford convertible on Sunday, 29. April 2007.

The historical stables of the royal Remonten Depots Schleissheim were the reason for settling the royal Bavarian air troops in Schleissheim near the castle. Obviously Mr. Spoden remembers the buildings which haven’t changed at all.

In Oberschleissheim the GIs are already expected and the official representatives of the community and the air field are preparing to hand over the village to the 45th Inf. Div. It is assumed that the U.S. Army is already in the Berglwald so that it can’t take much longer.

Recalling the surrender of Unterschleissheim the day before Mr. Spoden calls the representatives of Oberschleissheim also to surrender without a fight.

Mayor Ziegler together with Mr. Braun (B.F.H.) and Mr. Huettinger, chairman of today's Schleissheim Airfield, follow the lead of Mr. Spoden and too prepare to hand over to the U.S. Army.

After the handing over in the field camp of the 45th Inf. Div. in Oberschleissheim Mr. Spoden meets with Master Sergeant Blaschke to exchange Information with Mr. Braun.

After lunch the 45th Inf. Div. moves off past the castle in direction of the air field. The chance to take a picture with the mayor and Mr. Spoden does not pass untaken

Guest of honour Mr. Spoden accompanied by mayor Mrs Ziegler and the comrades of the 45th. Inf. Div.

... and once again Mr. Batzer and Mr. Auer as chauffeurs in their Tin Lizzy.

Every event has to end sometime, even if it lasts 2 days and presents a variety of interesting features. Mr. Spoden says good bye to all the actors, organizers and hosts, the many GIs and participants in a line up in front of the Junkers Hangars. Major Blaschke from the Life Magazine is the last in the line to receive a handshake.

The team in the background i.e. the members of the Königlich Bayrischen Oldtimerfreunde Schleissheim e.V. and the Bayerischen Flugzeug Historiker e.V. are also bade farewell.

...which means that there are many hands to shake ...

And then it’s back to Frankfurt. But before finally leaving the Piper PA-28 waves its wings – the old greeting amongst pilots.
