Surrender near the wood
The GIs meet Mr. Spoden and his entourage (the members of the B.F.H. and the Heimatmuseum) and are
surprised the unit surrenders without a fight waving a white flag. Not a shot is fired –
not in 2007 nor in 1945. The GIs greet Mr. Spoden who is most surprised at the successful enacting
of the surrender.

Mr. Spoden heartily greets Master Sergeant Blaschke representing the 45th Inf. Div.
|
|
The GIs have captured Mr. Spoden and his entourage. |
|
During the first 15 years of their existence the members of the 45th Inf. Div.
proudly wore an ancient Indian symbol for luck on their left shoulder, which was usually called
swastika. The symbol also represented the native Americans many of whom proudly served in the
45th. The yellow swastika on a red background represents the Spanish heritance of the four
south west states Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona the 45th was comprised of.
A similar symbol was created by the NSDAP in the late 20s and in course of the Machtergreifung
(seize of power) in 1933 became the symbol of fascism, so that the emblem of the 45th was changed.
The new and current symbol shows an Indian Thunderbird instead of the swastika.
In 1939 and after authorisation through the commanding generals of the 8th corps and the chief
of the National Guard Bureau the thunderbird became official. The thunderbird is a native American
symbol meaning “holy bearer of infinite luck”

Heavily safeguarded by soldiers the capture takes place. Later, the soldiers will take Mr. Spoden
and his party to Unterschleissheim.

|
Imposing and nearly authentic: The vehicles, equipment, uniform, and all personal belongings.
Except the soldier who is contemporary.

|
The soldiers are accompanied by a medics jeep with a charming crew authentically equipped.
