War War II ends in Schleissheim
The “Battle of Lohhof” is over and the U.S. Army
proceeds through Unterschleissheim towards the northern part of a forest, called Berglwald. There a
German unit is presumed to defend the village of Oberschleissheim and the airfield. The
Nachtjagdgeschwader 6 was in charge of the defence.
The part of the air reconnaissance is played in 2007 by a Wilga (PZL 104 Wilga 35) from the
airfield Schleissheim close by.
The Wilga flew the air reconnaissance for the oncoming U.S. Army.
The circling in the air - just as 62 years ago done by a Piper L-4 - was the sign for the GIs
to proceed from Unterschleissheim towards the wood.
Low and slow above the presumed position of the German Wehrmacht the
Wilga continues its reconnaissance.
After the situation is clear, the 45th Inf. Div. proceeds towards the wood in their vehicles
and on foot.
The advance party secures the area in the Berglwald and the unit slowly
follows.
The Jeep follows the infantry, safeguarding the soldiers in their approach.
Master Sergeant Blaschke leads the advance party.
Following the advance party a Dodge, displaying a mighty machine gun.
The unit has reached the Berglwald. In the distance, close to the edge of
the wood you can see Mr. Spoden, and the ones of the
Bavarian Aviation Historians (B.F.H.) and the Heimatmuseum (museum for local history) Unterschleissheim.
Near the wood Mr. Spoden beckons his peaceful surrender with a white flag.
Master Sergeant Blaschke advances with his sergeant. As a token of confidence he will remove his
helmet.
